The statutory tasks of the Institute of Forensic Psychiatry and Forensic Medicine of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine provide for conducting forensic medical examinations and investigations.

Pursuant to the Forensic Medical Examination Guidelines:

The subject of a forensic medical examination is an investigation, based on specialized knowledge, of physical objects containing information about the facts of a case considered by investigative authorities, an investigator, a prosecutor, or a court.

The objects of a forensic medical examination are living persons (suspects, victims, defendants, others), corpses, physical evidence, and files of criminal proceedings and civil cases.

Forensic medical examinations at the Institute:

• forensic medical examination of living persons to determine their age, the evidence, nature and severity of physical injuries, health grounds, and sexual status;
• forensic medical examination of a corpse when violence is suspected or under other circumstances that make such an examination conditional;
• forensic medical examination of physical evidence of biological origin (substances, tissues, inner organs);
• forensic medical examinations based on files of criminal proceedings and civil cases (medical records, expert opinions).
